How to Repair Excavator Yourself?​

Before you start any repair work, having a clear understanding of the excavator’s basic structure is essential. An excavator mainly consists of several key parts, each with a specific function that contributes to the machine’s overall operation.​

  • The undercarriage is the foundation of the excavator, responsible for its movement. It includes components such as tracks, track chains, sprockets, idlers, and rollers. The tracks provide traction on various terrains, while the sprockets drive the track chains, and the idlers and rollers keep the tracks aligned and supported. Regular inspection of the undercarriage is crucial; look for signs of wear on the track chains, loose bolts on the rollers, or damage to the sprockets.​
  • The upper structure houses the operator’s cab, engine, hydraulic system, and working equipment. The operator’s cab is where the excavator is controlled, equipped with joysticks, pedals, and a dashboard that displays important information like engine speed, hydraulic pressure, and fuel level. The engine is the power source, typically a diesel engine that generates the energy needed to run the hydraulic system and move the machine. The hydraulic system is the heart of the excavator, using hydraulic fluid to power the boom, arm, and bucket. It includes hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, and hoses. Any leak in the hydraulic hoses or a malfunction in the pumps can significantly affect the excavator’s performance.​

Hydraulic system leaks are one of the most common issues. Leaks can occur in hoses, fittings, cylinders, or valves. To fix this:​

  • Identify the leak source: First, park the excavator on a flat, level surface and turn off the engine. Clean the area around the suspected leak with a rag to remove any dirt or debris. Then, start the engine and operate the hydraulic controls to move the boom, arm, and bucket. Observe where the hydraulic fluid is leaking from.​
  • Replace damaged components: If the leak is from a hose, check for cracks, bulges, or wear. Use a wrench to loosen the fittings on both ends of the hose and replace it with a new one of the same size and pressure rating. If the leak is from a fitting, tighten it with a wrench. If the fitting is damaged, replace it. For leaks in cylinders or valves, it may be necessary to disassemble the component and replace the seals or O – rings.

  • Check the fuel system: First, ensure there is enough fuel in the tank. If the fuel level is low, add fuel. Next, check the fuel filter for clogs. A clogged fuel filter can prevent fuel from reaching the engine. Remove the fuel filter and replace it if it’s dirty. Also, check the fuel lines for leaks or blockages.​
  • Inspect the electrical system: Check the battery terminals for corrosion or loose connections. Clean the terminals with a wire brush and tighten them. Test the battery voltage with a multimeter; if the voltage is low, charge the battery or replace it. Check the starter motor for signs of damage. If the starter motor doesn’t make a sound when you turn the key, it may be faulty and need to be replaced.​
  • Check the air intake system: A clogged air filter can restrict air flow to the engine, causing starting problems. Remove the air filter and clean it or replace it if it’s dirty.

If the excavator’s tracks don’t move or move slowly, the problem may be in the undercarriage or the hydraulic system that controls the tracks:​

  • Inspect the undercarriage: Check the track chains for tightness. If the tracks are too loose, they can slip and not provide enough traction. Adjust the tension by turning the adjustment bolt on the idler. Also, check for damaged or broken track links, sprockets, or rollers. Replace any damaged components.​
  • Check the hydraulic system for track control: The tracks are powered by hydraulic motors. Check the hydraulic lines and fittings connected to the track motors for leaks. If there is a leak, fix it as described earlier. Also, check the hydraulic pressure for the track system using a pressure gauge. If the pressure is low, there may be a problem with the hydraulic pump or valve, which may require professional repair or replacement.​
    When troubleshooting failures, always start with the simplest possible cause and work your way up to more complex issues. Keep a record of the failures you encounter, the steps you took to fix them, and the parts you replaced. This record can be helpful for future reference and can also help you identify patterns in failures, allowing you to take preventive measures.

To repair an excavator yourself, you need to have the right tools and master basic maintenance skills.​

  • Hand tools: A set of wrenches (both open – end and socket), screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips), pliers (regular and needle – nose), and a hammer are essential. These tools are used for loosening and tightening bolts, removing screws, and manipulating small components.​
  • Power tools: An electric drill, impact wrench, and angle grinder can make repair work faster and easier. The electric drill is used for drilling holes, the impact wrench for tightening and loosening large bolts, and the angle grinder for cutting metal or removing rust.​

Inspect the excavator before each use, checking the fluid levels (engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, and fuel), the undercarriage for wear and damage, the hydraulic hoses and fittings for leaks, the working equipment for loose pins and bushings, and the electrical system for loose connections.​
  • Fluid change: Regularly change the engine oil, hydraulic fluid, and coolant according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Old or contaminated fluids can cause damage to the engine and hydraulic system. When changing fluids, also replace the filters (oil filter, hydraulic filter, and fuel filter) to ensure clean fluid circulation.​
  • Lubrication: Proper lubrication is essential to reduce friction and wear between moving parts. Lubricate the pins and bushings in the working equipment, the undercarriage components, and other moving parts using the appropriate type of lubricant. Refer to the excavator’s manual for the recommended lubrication points and intervals.​
  • Cleaning: Keep the excavator clean to prevent dirt and debris from entering the components and causing damage. After each use, wash the exterior of the machine with water and a mild detergent. Clean the air filter regularly to ensure good air flow to the engine. Also, clean the hydraulic cooler and radiator to prevent overheating.​
    Practice using the tools regularly to become familiar with their operation. You can start with small maintenance tasks, such as changing the oil or cleaning the air filter, to build your confidence and skills. As you gain more experience, you can take on more complex repair work.
