The liquid refrigerant subsequently moves to the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the cabin air, cooling it down before it is blown into the cabin by the blower.

Detecting compressor failure early is crucial to avoid costly repairs, minimize downtime, and protect other components of the AC system (such as the condenser and evaporator) from damage. Below are the most common signs that indicate your heavy equipment’s AC compressor may be failing:

Refrigerant is the lifeblood of the AC system, and the compressor relies on it to maintain proper lubrication and cooling. A refrigerant leak is often one of the first signs of compressor trouble. Leaks can occur due to worn seals, cracked hoses, or damage to the compressor’s housing. Additionally, a low refrigerant level will cause the compressor to work harder than normal, leading to overheating and eventual failure.

A healthy AC compressor operates with a smooth, consistent hum. If you hear unusual noises when the AC is turned on, it’s a clear red flag. Common abnormal noises include grinding, squealing, or rattling sounds. Grinding noises usually indicate that the compressor’s internal components—such as bearings or pistons—are worn out or damaged.
